The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 200,000 on Perera and Sons Bakers Pvt Ltd after the company pleaded guilty to selling expired bakery products.
The case was filed by Investigation Officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) following an inspection at the company’s outlet on St. Benedict’s Mawatha, Colombo 13, on 20 April 2026.
During the inspection, officers detected strawberry‑flavoured cream buns bearing an expiry date of 16 April 2026 being offered for sale.
Legal proceedings were subsequently initiated, and when the matter was taken up before court yesterday (09), the defendant company admitted guilt. The Magistrate then ordered the fine of Rs. 200,000.
The CAA reminded consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing food items, stressing the importance of checking manufacturing and expiry dates.
