Central Environmental Authority gets new Director General

Kapila Rajapaksha was appointed as the new Director General of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) on Monday (25), filling the vacant position. 

The appointment letter was handed over by the Minister of Environment, Dammika Patabandi, at the Ministry of Environment yesterday.

Kapila Rajapaksha holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science from the University of Ruhuna. He has also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Development Planning from the University of Ruhuna and a Master of Science in Forestry and Environment Management from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

He has served as an Environmental and Social Development Specialist for the “Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE)” regional project, which is executed by the South Asia Cooperative Environment Program (SACEP). He also worked as an active environmental specialist for the JICA-funded Rural Infrastructure Development Project in Emerging Regions (RIDEP), which was implemented in Sri Lanka.

Furthermore, he has worked as a Senior Environmental Officer for the World Bank-funded Metro Colombo Urban Development Project (MCUDP) and as a specialist for the ADB-funded Secondary Town and Rural Community-Based Water Supply and Sanitation Project, which was implemented in Sri Lanka. Rajapaksha is a highly experienced officer who has served as an environmental specialist and professional, and this appointment is expected to strengthen the CEA’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

The Central Environmental Authority is a key institution operating under the Ministry of Environment. It is responsible for implementing environmental protection licensing procedures, environmental impact assessments, environmental education, promotion and information services, and special laws, programs, and regulations for the process of environmental conservation.
