Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority has warned that inefficient household appliances are a leading cause of rising electricity bills in the country.
Director General Harsha Wickramasinghe, speaking to the media in Colombo, said surveys have shown that refrigerators over 10 years old and outdated air conditioners consume excessive power.
“In the Western Province alone, one in three refrigerators is in unsuitable condition for use. This results in an additional 100 units or more per month,” he said.
Wickramasinghe added that the government has already restricted the import of low-efficiency appliances and will tighten the law on air conditioners by the end of this year.
