
Several fatal road accidents involving motorcycles and three-wheelers were reported across the country on April 10, Police said.
In Horana, a motorcycle travelling towards Horana veered off the road and crashed into a bridge near Pokunuwita Junction after the rider reportedly lost control. Both the rider and pillion passenger were seriously injured and admitted to the Horana Hospital, where the pillion rider, a 45-year-old resident of Kiriella, later succumbed to injuries.
In Padukka, a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a motorcycle travelling from Madulawa towards Liyanwala Junction in the Kurugala area. The 32-year-old victim, a resident of Padukka, died after being admitted to the Homagama Hospital.
Another fatal accident was reported in Kosgoda, where a motorcycle collided with a bicycle near Ambagahahandiya along the Gonagala-Kaikawala Road. The 73-year-old cyclist from Induruwa died after being admitted to hospital, while the motorcyclist and pillion rider sustained injuries.
In Girandurukotte, a motorcyclist died after losing control of the motorcycle following a collision with a dog, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash into a tree. The 55-year-old rider, a resident of Polwaga Janapadaya, died after being admitted to hospital.
Meanwhile, in Mawatagama, a three-wheel collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction along the Meegolla Road. Three passengers sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital, where a 74-year-old man from Welikanda died. Both drivers were arrested in connection with the accident.
Another fatal three-wheel accident was reported in Girandurukotte when a van travelling towards Dehiattakandiya collided with a three-wheel travelling in the opposite direction. The three-wheel driver, a 39-year-old woman from Dehiattakandiya, died after being admitted to hospital. The van driver has been arrested.
Police said investigations into the incidents are ongoing. (Newswire)
