
A 45-year-old woman has been arrested in Kalagedihena, Gampaha for allegedly possessing protected wildlife parts for sale, the Department of Wildlife Conservation said.
The arrest was made during a raid carried out based on intelligence provided by the Sri Lanka Air Force.
Wildlife officers seized five shells of the protected Sri Lankan giant land snail, two spider conch shells, five sets of sambhur antlers, eight sets of spotted deer antlers, two individual deer antlers, part of an elephant tusk and 23 unidentified shells.
The items were found at a premises said to house antique collections.
The suspect was later produced before the Horagolla Wildlife Office and released on Rs. 1 million personal bail.
She and the seized items are due to be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court on July 10.
The raid was carried out jointly by officers from several Wildlife offices and the Police Special Task Force. (Newswire)
