The Department of Meteorology says an increase in rainfall is expected after the 21st of October due to a disturbance developing over the Bay of Bengal.

Director General Athula Karunanayake said the atmospheric disturbance currently positioned to the southeast of Sri Lanka is likely to develop into a low-pressure area, leading to enhanced showers across most parts of the island.

Although the system will not directly affect Sri Lanka, the country will experience intensified rainfall, he added.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has extended landslide warnings for six districts — Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura — as the wet weather continues.

Senior Scientist Dr. Wasantha Senadheera said residents in these areas are advised to remain alert for possible slope failures.

The Department of Irrigation said spill gates of several reservoirs have been opened as water levels continue to rise.

Its Director of Water Management H. M. Herath said spill gates in almost all major reservoirs under the department’s control are now open.

According to the Disaster Management Centre, one person has died due to the prevailing weather, with Anuradhapura and Kurunegala districts among the most affected by heavy rains. (Newswire)
