Showers or thundershowers are expected across several parts of Sri Lanka today, with rough sea conditions forecast along the southern and eastern coasts, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Rain is expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts, where cloudy conditions will prevail.
Fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is likely in parts of the Sabaragamuwa Province and the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
Strong winds of 40–50 kmph are also expected at times across the North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces.
Meanwhile, seas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be rough or very rough at times, with wind speeds reaching 60–70 kmph. Naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into these waters until further notice.
Sea areas from Kankesanthurai to Matara via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle may also become rough, with winds reaching 50–60 kmph.
Wave heights could rise to between 2.5 and 3 metres in waters from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
