The Gampaha High Court Trial-at-Bar has delivered its verdict in the case related to the attack and killing of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer.
The incident occurred on May 9, 2022, in the Nittambuwa area, during the ‘Aragalaya’, when then-MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his personal security officer were both killed in a mob attack. Several suspects connected to the attack were taken into custody.
Following the investigation, the Attorney General filed charges against 41 individuals in relation to the murders at the Gampaha High Court.
After a lengthy trial, the three-judge bench delivered the verdict today: 12 suspects were sentenced to death, 23 were acquitted, and four were handed six-month prison terms, suspended for five years. (NewsWire)
