Govt to fill 8,547 job vacancies: Full list of ministries revealed

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the recruitment of 8,547 personnel across several government ministries, provincial councils, and commissions, following recommendations from a special committee appointed to review the public service recruitment process.

The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Prime Minister, was appointed on 30 December 2024 to streamline recruitments by identifying requirements, priorities, and time frames for filling existing vacancies.

At its meeting held on 2 October 2025, the committee presented its findings and recommendations, after which Cabinet approval was granted for relevant ministries and institutions to proceed with filling vacancies.

According to the Cabinet decision, the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs accounts for the highest number of vacancies — 5,198 positions. The Ministry of Buddhism, Religious, and Cultural Affairs follows with 1,261 vacancies, while the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has 355 positions to be filled.

Other key allocations include:

* Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development – 310 vacancies

* Western Provincial Council – 414 vacancies

* Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure – 213 vacancies

* Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Professional Education – 79 vacancies

* Ministry of Health and Mass Media – 120 vacancies

Vacancies have also been approved for provincial councils, including the Northern, North Western, North Central, and Sabaragamuwa councils.
