The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has written to the Mahanayake Theras of both the Asgiriya and Malwathu Chapters, raising concerns over what it describes as the government’s attempts to oppress war heroes – referring to the military soldiers who fought to end terrorism in Sri Lanka.
In letters dated September 2 and signed by SLPP General Secretary Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam, the party warns that while terrorism ended 16 years ago, the ideology behind it still persists. It accuses the present administration of taking steps that satisfy groups hostile to war heroes, allegedly under pressure from external actors who supported the government’s rise to power.
The SLPP claims that war heroes are being unfairly persecuted and that there is an “unspoken understanding” between the government and anti-military groups. The letters further criticize the government for neglecting the annual commemorations for fallen war heroes and instead tolerating events that glorify terrorism, both locally and abroad.
The party stressed that safeguarding the dignity of war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom is a national responsibility and appealed for the blessings and supportive guidance of the Maha Sangha in this matter. (Newswire)
