Afternoon showers are expected in most parts of Sri Lanka today, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The department states that the Intertropical Convergence Zone, where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres converge, is currently affecting the island’s weather.

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island during the afternoon or night. Showers may occur in the Southern and Western provinces and the Puttalam, Ampara and Batticaloa districts in the morning.

Fairly heavy falls of about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and the Hambantota and Ampara districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the island.

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
