Strong winds of up to 70 kmph, rough seas and showers or thundershowers are expected in several sea areas around Sri Lanka today (25), the Department of Meteorology has warned.
In its marine weather forecast issued at 5.30 a.m., the department said showers or thundershowers would occur at several places in the sea areas around the island.
South-westerly winds of 30–40 kmph could strengthen to 50–60 kmph in sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, while wave heights could reach 2–2.5 metres in waters extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the department warned naval and fishing communities not to venture into deep-sea areas bounded by 10°N–20°N and 80°E–95°E until further notice, as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify further. (Newswire)
