A massive fire continues to burn hours after a UPS cargo aircraft crashed during takeoff at US Louisville International Airport in Kentucky on Wednesday evening.
Local officials confirmed that at least seven people have been killed, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue operations continue. At least 11 others are being treated for injuries, while several remain missing.
Residents living near the airport have been urged to shelter indoors as thick smoke and toxic fumes spread across nearby neighborhoods. The aircraft was carrying approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel when it exploded, engulfing nearby warehouses and businesses in flames.
UPS said three crew members were on board Flight 2976, which was bound for Hawaii. All three are still unaccounted for.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff at around 5:15 p.m. local time. Emergency crews from multiple counties have been deployed to battle the blaze and locate possible survivors.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
