The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) today paid tribute to Justice Rathanapriya Gurusinghe on his retirement from the Court of Appeal, while renewing calls for his elevation to the Supreme Court.
In a farewell sitting held at Court No. 205, the BASL described Justice Gurusinghe’s judicial career as “long, distinguished and highly respected,” noting his service across Colombo, Nawalapitiya, Gampola, Avissawella, Chilaw, Matara, Matale, and Kandy since beginning his career in 1996.
In a statement, BASL stated that he was elevated to the High Court in 2012 and later to the Court of Appeal in December 2020, where he also served as Acting President earlier this year.
The BASL recalled that former Chief Justice Murdu Fernando PC had recommended Justice Gurusinghe for elevation to the Supreme Court, a recommendation still pending at the President’s Office.
The Association said it had reminded the President twice, stressing that his “unblemished record of distinguished service” makes him eminently suited for the apex court.
In its statement, the BASL praised his dignity, patience, and fairness in conducting proceedings, as well as his role in judicial reform.
“While Your Lordship may now leave the Bench, the respect and affection earned through years of honourable service will undoubtedly endure,” the Association said, wishing him health and fulfilment in retirement. (Newswire)
