22nd Constitutional Amendment Draft Bill before Parliament today

The 22nd Constitutional Amendment Draft Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill are scheduled to be presented to Parliament today by Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara.

The 22nd Amendment seeks to raise the retirement age of Supreme Court judges from 65 to 67 and Court of Appeal judges from 63 to 65. The Judicature (Amendment) Bill seeks to increase the retirement age of High Court, District Court and Magistrates’ Court judges to 62.

After the first reading, the Bills can be challenged before the Supreme Court within one week. The court must inform the Speaker of its determination within three to 21 days after considering any petitions. (Newswire)
