
A low-pressure area persists over the central parts of the south Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of Sri Lanka, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Its influence is expected to affect weather conditions over the island and surrounding sea areas during the next 24 hours.
Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North Central, Central, Uva, Eastern and Southern provinces.
Fairly heavy rainfall above 75 mm is likely at some places in the Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Polonnaruwa, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 1 p.m.
In sea areas, showers or thundershowers will occur at times off the coast from Galle to Trincomalee via Hambantota and Batticaloa. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly at 30-40 kph and may increase up to 50 kph at times in sea areas off the coast from Kalutara to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Sea areas off the coast from Kalutara to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are expected during thundershowers.
Naval and fishing communities are advised to remain attentive to future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology. The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Newswire)
