The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by the Minister of Energy to launch the “Surakimu Lanka” National Energy Security Mission aimed at improving energy efficiency and managing electricity consumption.

The government said Sri Lanka’s energy security has been affected by heavy reliance on fossil fuels, drought conditions, fuel supply disruptions and fluctuations in global fuel prices, increasing pressure on the national economy through higher fuel import costs.

Authorities also identified irregular electricity consumption patterns as a contributing factor and stressed the need to shift power usage toward periods with higher renewable energy generation while promoting efficient energy use through public behavioural changes.

The programme will be implemented with the participation of government institutions, public corporations, statutory bodies, the private sector and the public under the leadership of the Presidential Secretariat, the Ministry of Energy, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat.(Newswire)
