Authorities have identified 60 locations across five electoral divisions in Colombo where blocked drains and waterways are obstructing the flow of floodwater.
A joint operation to clear the obstructions entered its second day on Sunday, following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall on November 6.
The operation covers several areas, including Narahenpita, Bambalapitiya, Wellawatte, Kirulapone, Dematagoda and Central Colombo.
Officials said the recent flooding was worsened by poorly maintained drainage systems, unauthorised land reclamation, unplanned construction and a lack of coordination among state institutions.
The Sri Lanka Army, Colombo Municipal Council, Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, Urban Development Authority and Road Development Authority are among the agencies involved in the operation.
The initiative aims to improve drainage and reduce the risk of future flooding in Colombo. (Newswire)
