A new wave of WhatsApp scams is spreading in Sri Lanka, with fraudsters posing as professional or official contacts to trick users into sharing One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or clicking on malicious links. Once an account is compromised, it is used to target the victim’s friends and family for money.
The public is advised to stay alert, never share OTPs or banking information, and educate elderly or less tech-savvy relatives who are more vulnerable to such scams.
Those who lose access to their accounts can contact [support@whatsapp.com] to recover them. Complaints regarding such incidents may also be filed with the Police Cyber Crimes Unit via [https://telligp.police.lk] (Newswire)
