Sri Lanka Police has announced plans to install CCTV cameras at every police station across the country to strengthen monitoring and oversight of police activities.

Police Media Spokesman ASP F. U. Wootler said procurement activities for the project are already underway.

He said arrangements would also be made to monitor police stations through footage recorded by the CCTV cameras.

The initiative is expected to improve transparency and accountability within police stations, amid growing public concerns over the treatment of suspects in police custody.

However, police have not specified when the installation process will be completed or how the monitoring system will operate.

The announcement comes amid renewed public attention to incidents involving deaths and alleged mistreatment of suspects in police custody. (Newswire)
