Sri Lanka has recorded a sharp rise in dengue cases this year, with official surveillance data showing 80,114 infections as of July 23, 2026 midnight.
Health officials confirmed 59 dengue‑related deaths this year, with a case fatality rate of 0.07%. As of Week 29, there are 175 high‑risk MOH areas, with an average of 2,391 new cases reported daily.
The outbreak has intensified in recent months, with 24,739 cases reported in July alone, making it the worst month so far. June also saw a high number of cases at 21,534, while earlier months recorded comparatively lower figures.
The Western Province remains the most affected, accounting for more than half of all cases nationwide. Gampaha has reported 16,950 infections, while Colombo has recorded 16,091, together making up over 40% of the national total. Other districts with significant case numbers include Matara (5,534), Kandy (4,827), Kalutara (4,545), and Ratnapura (4,428). The Colombo Municipal Council area itself has reported over 3,200 cases.
Across provinces, the Southern Province has reported 12,143 cases, Central Province 6,686, and Sabaragamuwa 6,607. Smaller but notable outbreaks have been recorded in North Western (3,844), Eastern (3,148), Uva (2,154), North Central (1,264), and Northern (1,173).
Authorities have urged residents in high‑risk districts to step up mosquito control measures and seek immediate medical care for suspected symptoms, warning that the outbreak could worsen if preventive action is not strictly followed. (Newswire)
