The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection has approved the Chief of Defence Staff (Repeal) Bill, with the proposed legislation scheduled to be taken up for its second reading in Parliament on Sept. 9.
The committee meeting was attended by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and the commanders of the three armed forces.
The Bill seeks to repeal the legislation introduced in 2009 relating to the Chief of Defence Staff, amid ongoing restructuring within the Ministry of Defence.
According to committee member Najith Indika, coordination among the three armed forces is currently being handled by the Ministry of Defence, forming the basis for the proposed repeal.
The Bill is now scheduled to proceed to its second reading in Parliament on Sept. 9. (Newswire)
