The Sri Lanka Police have reported that a 29‑year‑old suspect from Kalutara was arrested on Sunday morning (08) after attempting to snatch a gold necklace worth approximately Rs. 250,000 from an 18‑year‑old woman in Wennappuwa.

The incident occurred on St. Anthony’s Street while the victim was travelling on a scooter from her residence to the supermarket.

Hearing her cries for help, a nearby youth chased down the suspect, apprehended him, and handed him over to police officers.

The Police praised the young man’s socially responsible and immediate action, noting that such interventions help prevent crime.

However, confirming that the victim sustained minor injuries, the Police said the public must always follow by promptly handing suspects over to law enforcement without harassment or assault.

Authorities reminded the public that dialing the emergency number 119 is the safest way to alert the police and that preserving evidence at the crime scene is vital for investigations and court proceedings. (Newswire)
