Sri Lanka plans to clear a backlog of 650,000 vehicle number plates and 450,000 driving licences within the next six months, Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, retired Air Vice Marshal Tushara Idunil Fernando, said.
The Department of Motor Traffic has also decided to establish motorcycle registration centres in five districts to improve service delivery.
The first centre was opened in Gampaha, with similar facilities planned for Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Hambantota and Jaffna.
Fernando said the registration service would later be extended to other vehicle categories. He also commented on the quality standards of vehicle number plates. (Newswire)
