Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has welcomed President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s decision to allow the Iranian vessel IRIS Bushehr to enter local waters and dock at Trincomalee Port, while bringing its 208 crew members to Colombo on humanitarian grounds.
“This is a timely move that reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to humanitarian obligations under international law,” Rajapaksa said, stressing the importance of maintaining neutrality in the ongoing conflict.
In a post on ‘X’, he further noted that Sri Lanka must continue to uphold its humanitarian gestures whenever the need arises, while ensuring that its stance remains neutral in global conflicts.
Rajapaksa also expressed hope that the government would push for dialogue with all parties concerned to safeguard peace and stability in the Gulf region and globally.
“It is equally important that Sri Lanka works closely with India and other regional partners to ensure the safety and maritime security of the Indian Ocean,” he added. (Newswire)
