
Sri Lanka Customs has seized over 32 kilograms of cannabis at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake and arrested two Canadian nationals attempting to smuggle the drugs into the country.
Customs officials attached to the Arrival Terminal and the Customs Narcotics Control Unit intercepted the suspects on Tuesday following a targeted inspection.
The suspects have been identified as a 25-year-old male and a 29-year-old female, both Canadian nationals. They had arrived in Sri Lanka at around 11:15 a.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 403 from Bangkok, Thailand.
During the inspection, Customs officers discovered 32.159 kilograms of cannabis concealed inside their luggage. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately Rs. 321.59 million.
The suspects were immediately taken into custody and the narcotics were seized by Customs.
Initial investigations were carried out by Sri Lanka Customs and the Customs Narcotics Control Unit. The suspects and the seized narcotics are to be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations and legal action. (Newswire)
