Former Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara was granted bail on Wednesday (15) after being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption in connection with alleged abuse of power linked to the 2023 Sri Lanka–Israel labour agreement.

The Bribery Commission said Nanayakkara was accused of misusing his ministerial position by depriving individuals who had been officially selected for agricultural employment in Israel of their opportunity, instead offering it to a selected group of people.

According to the Commission, the former minister’s actions conferred an unlawful advantage to himself and others, while causing wrongful loss to other applicants, amounting to an offence of corruption.

Nanayakkara was arrested at around 2:31 p.m. and later produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, which released him on bail. (Newswire)
