The Kandy Police have arrested an Army Officer on active duty over a chain snatching incident reported at the Kandy Lake Round, it is reported.
The Army Officer is said to have snatched a woman’s chain at the Kandy Lake Round and fled on a motorcycle.
CCTV footage inspected by the Police has found that the suspect was a resident of Thalathuoya.
A secret investigation conducted by the Police had found that the suspect had served in the Army for nearly 20 years and was currently attached to the Weli Oya Army camp.
He was arrested after being lured to Kandy Town, while interrogations had revealed that he had applied for leave and was engaging in chain snatching.
The Police have found the stolen gold chain and another gold chain worth Rs. 500,00 that had been previously stolen from two pawning centres in the Kandy and Galaha areas.
The Kandy Police are conducting investigations into another chain snatching involving the said Army officer.
Investigations have found that the Army officer had been involved in chain snatching for a period of time and had invested the money from the jewellery in a pyramid scheme.
The Army officer has been remanded after being produced before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court and is to be produced for an identification parade today. (Newswire)
