The printing of driver’s licences, which had been halted due to a shortage of printing cards, has resumed, the Department of Motor Traffic said.
The department noted that printing work restarted last week, with plans to produce around 6,000 licences daily.
It is reported that nearly 350,000 licences had piled up during the recent period as a result of the shortage. With new card stocks now available, printing has recommenced, and the department aims to clear the backlog quickly.
Meanwhile, the department plans to issue new driver’s licences within 14 days of application. All district offices are expected to be linked through an online system to support this, and several have already been connected.
In addition to the Werahera main office, printing is currently carried out at the Hambantota and Anuradhapura district offices, with Kurunegala also scheduled to begin printing in the near future.
