According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in several areas, particularly across parts of the Northern, North Central, Western, Eastern, Uva, Southern and Sabaragamuwa regions, as indicated in the warning map.
The department warned that thunderstorms could be accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, potentially causing disruptions to transport, electricity and communication services.
The warning also highlights the risk of lightning strikes, injuries to people outdoors and damage to electrical and electronic equipment.
The public has been advised to suspend outdoor activities, including sports, construction and agricultural work, when thunderstorms approach.
People are also urged to seek shelter inside secure buildings or enclosed vehicles and avoid open areas, isolated trees, beaches, rivers and other water bodies.
The department further advised the public to avoid using electrical appliances and wired electrical systems during thunderstorms and to keep children and vulnerable individuals indoors. (Newswire)
