The Fort Magistrate’s Court has ordered that facts be reported to the Court of Appeal to initiate contempt of court proceedings against politians Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Sugishwara Bandara, Dilith Jayaweera, Asanka Navaratne and Senior Lecturer Mahinda Pathirana.

The order relates to public statements allegedly made by them during a satyagraha held between July 7 and 15 against the arrest of former State Intelligence Service Director Suresh Sallay over the Easter Sunday attacks investigation.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reported the findings of its investigation to Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara.

After considering the submissions, the Magistrate observed that, on the face of it, the statements appeared to criticise ongoing judicial proceedings.

Accordingly, the court decided to seek the institution of contempt of court proceedings against these individuals before the Court of Appeal. (Newswire)
