Three shops fined Rs. 100,000 each for selling rice above MRP

Three retail outlets have been fined Rs. 100,000 each for selling rice above the gazetted Maximum Retail Price (MRP), as part of ongoing island-wide enforcement by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

At the Welimada Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (05), a shop in Atampitiya, Badulla, was fined for selling Keeri Samba rice at Rs. 379 per kilogram, exceeding the MRP of Rs. 260. Authorities said consumers were overcharged by Rs. 119 per kilo.

In a separate case, the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court on Monday (04) fined a shop in Navagamuwa, Ranala, Rs. 100,000 for selling imported Keeri Ponni rice at Rs. 375 per kilogram, above the MRP of Rs. 255, resulting in an overcharge of Rs. 120 per kilo.

Also, a shop in the Kothalawala area was also fined Rs. 100,000 by the same court for selling Keeri Ponni rice above the stipulated price. (Newswire)
