Legal action is being taken against a shop in Kandy city after officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) discovered it was hoarding gas stocks while falsely claiming to customers that supplies were unavailable.

The CAA said the raid was carried out on Monday (20) as part of its ongoing nationwide campaign to crack down on merchants who inconvenience the public by hoarding gas and selling it above the stipulated price.

Officials confirmed that the businessman responsible will face legal proceedings in due course.

The Authority stressed that continuous raids are being conducted across the country to protect consumers from unfair practices. (Newswire)

Sri Lanka’s economy will not collapse and there will be no shortage of cooking gas, Cabinet Minister Vijitha Herath told Parliament on Wednesday, dismissing claims circulating in recent weeks as fear-mongering.

Speaking in Parliament, Herath said the government has made arrangements to ensure uninterrupted gas supplies through a new supplier, with the first shipment scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on Jan. 5.

“The economy is not collapsing. Some in the opposition are engaging in a very low and irresponsible attempt to frighten the public,” Herath said.

He also rejected concerns that recent adverse weather conditions had negatively affected the tourism sector, noting that tourist arrivals have continued as normal. According to Herath, arrivals this year have already exceeded 2.2 million.

Addressing criticism from opposition figures, the minister said while some lawmakers continued to make what he described as baseless claims, many opposition members had worked alongside the government during the recent disaster situation to assist affected communities.

Herath’s remarks come after heightened public concern over economic stability, essential supplies and the impact of extreme weather on key sectors, including tourism, as Sri Lanka continues its recovery from recent natural disasters.

According to the gas dealer, the price reduction will be effective from midnight today (June 04).

The revised prices are as follows;

Litro Gas Lanka has announced that there will be no price revision on Litro domestic LP gas for the month of March.

Litro Gas Chairman Muditha Pieris said that based on the fuel price formula, a price revision will not be implemented for this month.

Meanwhile, revisions to fuel prices are yet to be announced.

The Ministry of Finance has announced changes that will affect the prices of fuel and LP gas from January next year. 

According to the Tax Policy Advisor of the Ministry of Finance Thanuja Perera, the prices of fuel and LP gas will increase due to the implementation of the Value-Added Tax at 18%.

Perera said, however, that the Finance Ministry has decided to remove the 7.5% Ports and Airports Development Levy (PAL) for fuel and LP gas.

Perera further said the Ports and Airports Development Levy (PAL) for fuel and LP gas will be removed once the VAT comes into effect from January 01, 2024. (NewsWire)
