Gateway College has taken over ownership of the Regent Country Club in Malabe, in a landmark transaction that will pave the way for the establishment of a new state of the art international school in one of the fastest-growing residential areas in the Greater Colombo region.

Significantly, the transaction takes place at a special milestone in the history of both organisations, as Gateway and Prime Lands, having had humble beginnings three decades ago, celebrate their 30th anniversaries this year. The landmark collaboration marks another important chapter in the growth journeys of two organisations that have made a significant impact in their respective fields.

The transaction follows a decision by the Prime Group to focus on several of its large scale development projects while facilitating the establishment of a high quality international school in an area where the Group has played a significant role in driving residential development.

The picturesque 3.2 acre property is already equipped with a range of well-developed facilities, including a banquet hall, conference rooms, offices, swimming pool, gymnasium and other supporting infrastructure. These facilities will provide a strong foundation for the development of a modern educational environment designed to meet the needs of a growing community.

Sandamini Perera, Co-Founder and Co-Chairperson of Prime Lands (Pvt) Ltd, said that Malabe and its surrounding areas have emerged as some of the fastest-growing regions in Sri Lanka.

“Prime Lands, together with many other developers, has contributed significantly to the transformation of this area into a highly sought-after residential region for the upper middle class segment of Greater Colombo’s urban population. We are delighted to see Gateway College establish its presence here, providing residents in Malabe and the surrounding areas with convenient access to an international school offering education of the highest quality,” she said.

Dr. Harsha Alles, Chairman of the Gateway Group, expressed his appreciation to the Prime Group for facilitating the transaction and supporting the process through a phased approach that made the acquisition possible.

“We are extremely grateful to the Prime Group for the manner in which they facilitated this entire process. The phased approach adopted by them enabled us to make this landmark transaction a reality,” Dr. Alles said.

He added that the new school would further strengthen the Gateway Group’s growing network of educational institutions, which includes Gateway Colleges in Rajagiriya, Kandy, Negombo, Dehiwala and Ratmalana, as well as Springfield Colleges in Kandy, Borella and Nugegoda.

All Gateway and Springfield schools operate from spacious campuses equipped with modern facilities. In addition, students across the network benefit from shared specialised facilities, including the nine-acre sports ground in Seeduwa, a 50-metre swimming pool in Negombo and a football pitch in Ratmalana.

“With our vision of Energize, Enlighten, Empower, Gateway will continue to strive towards providing a truly global education within a local setting,” Dr. Alles said. “Our objective is to create an environment in which young people are equipped with the knowledge, skills, confidence and values they need to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.”

Gateway Colleges has once again demonstrated its strength in the sciences, with four students selected to represent Sri Lanka at the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) 2026, following outstanding performances at the 16th Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad Competition organised by the Geological Society of Sri Lanka.

The International Earth Science Olympiad will be held in Turin, Italy, from 20 to 27 August 2026. Hosted by the University of Turin, the eight-day competition brings together national teams from more than 40 countries for a combination of theoretical, practical, and field-based assessments covering geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, terrestrial astronomy, and environmental science. Participants will also collaborate in international teams on field investigations and research projects conducted in the Alpine environment.

Selection to the Sri Lankan team was based on performance in both a written examination and a final interview. Selvendra Jathuran of Gateway College Dehiwala emerged as the overall first-place winner in the national competition. He will be joined in the Sri Lankan team by Ayodh Induwara Abeyratne, Losara Kulatunge, and Gamlathralalage Mihin Apsara, all from Gateway College Colombo.

Gateway students were also strongly represented among the country’s highest achievers overall, with several earning invitations to the final interview stage after placing within the national top fifteen. In addition to the four students selected to represent Sri Lanka, Neesha Hanarasinghe (Gateway College Dehiwala), Jasmine Angela Balasuriya (Gateway College Colombo), and Jehan Gunarathne (Gateway College Colombo) were also recognised for their excellent performances in the competition.

The fact that all the students selected to represent Sri Lanka this year come from Gateway Colleges is a noteworthy reflection of the Group’s sustained emphasis on scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and academic excellence. Their achievement is a credit not only to their talent and dedication, but also to the guidance of their teachers and the encouragement of their families throughout a demanding national selection process.

Gateway College’s global footprint continues to expand through a remarkable legacy of students securing admission to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including Ivy League institutions in the United States, Russell Group universities in the United Kingdom, Australia’s Group of Eight (Go8), and Canada’s U15 research universities. The College has also established itself as one of Sri Lanka’s leading international schools in securing university scholarships, with many students earning fully funded awards that cover tuition, accommodation and living expenses creating truly life changing opportunities.

Behind these outstanding achievements lies Gateway College’s comprehensive Higher Education Counselling programme. Recognising that university admissions have become increasingly competitive and complex, the College continues to invest significantly in the professional development of its counsellors, ensuring that they remain at the forefront of global higher education trends. This enables every student to benefit from informed, personalised guidance throughout the university application journey.

As part of this commitment, eight members of Gateway College’s Higher Education Counselling Team, representing the Colleges in Colombo, Dehiwala, Kandy and Negombo, participated in the five-day Counsel Initiative Bootcamp 2026, held in New Delhi, India, from 8thto 12thJune. Organised by La Mentoraa, one of South Asia’s leading higher education counselling organisations, the Bootcamp brought together counsellors from across the region for an intensive programme of learning, collaboration and professional exchange.

The programme explored the latest developments in global higher education and university admissions, with extensive sessions on application processes in the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland, while also examining emerging study destinations such as Japan, continental Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. Participants also gained valuable insights into the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in university counselling, learning how technology can enhance student support while preserving the personalised guidance that remains central to successful counselling.

The Bootcamp further strengthened counsellors’ expertise in helping students develop authentic personal narratives, write compelling application essays, understand holistic admissions practices and navigate ethical decision-making throughout the admissions process. It also provided in-depth exposure to university research, financial aid opportunities, admissions workflows and major application platforms, including the Common Application, UCAS and the CSS Profile.

Gateway’s commitment to excellence extends well beyond this programme. Its counsellors regularly participate in leading international professional forums, including the annual IC3 Conference and the International ACAC Conference. These engagements not only enable counsellors to remain abreast of the latest developments in global university admissions but also provide invaluable opportunities to build relationships with fellow counselling professionals and university admissions officers from around the world.

Dr. Harsha Alles, the Chairman of Gateway says “As competition for places at the world’s leading universities continues to intensify, the importance of knowledgeable, experienced and globally connected counsellors has never been greater. Gateway College’s sustained investment in the professional growth of its counselling team ensures that students receive expert guidance that reflects the latest developments in international higher education.”

This unwavering commitment to both student success and counsellor excellence is another reflection of Gateway College’s mission to prepare young people for success on the global stage. As Gateway students continue to gain admission to the world’s finest universities and secure prestigious scholarships, the College remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering every student with the knowledge, guidance and opportunities to realise their highest aspirations.
