A policy framework on digital transformation in the education sector will be submitted for Cabinet approval by March 2026, the Digital Task Force on Education Reform said.
The update was shared at a meeting of the Subcommittee under the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, chaired by Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya on Sept. 23.
Task force officials outlined a plan focusing on six key areas of digitalization, including addressing the teacher shortage, providing ICT equipment, ensuring continuity of schooling during disruptions, and enhancing learning through digital tools.
They said all schools without internet access will be connected by Dec. 31, 2025, while schools lacking basic digital resources will be equipped with at least one smart board and either a computer or laptop.
Current data shows that three schools still lack electricity, 546 have no computers, laptops, or tablets, and 2,088 do not have a smart board.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya stressed the importance of broad support for the reforms, calling it a major investment in the country’s future. She urged stakeholders to share ideas and proposals with the Digital Task Force.
Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madhura Senevirathna, ministry officials, and MPs also attended the meeting. (Newswire)
