The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for 17 districts, from 12.30 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. today (April 14).
The advisory applies to the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Uva provinces, as well as the districts of Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura, Mannar and Vavuniya.
Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected in these areas after 1.00 p.m., with the possibility of temporary localized strong winds.
The public has been urged to take precautions to minimize damage from lightning activity. Authorities advise seeking shelter indoors and avoiding taking cover under trees. Open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies should also be avoided during thunderstorms.
Residents are further advised to refrain from using wired telephones and electrical appliances, and to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats during adverse weather conditions.
The public has also been warned to be cautious of fallen trees and power lines, and to contact local disaster management authorities in case of emergencies. (Newswire)
