The Irrigation Department has issued a Red Flood Warning for the Attanagalu Oya Basin, warning that a major flood situation may occur in low-lying areas within the next six hours due to heavy rainfall in the catchment.
According to the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division, intense rainfall is currently being experienced in several parts of the basin, and analysis of river water levels recorded at gauging stations indicates a high risk of flooding in the Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys.
The warning highlights that Gampaha town and surrounding areas are particularly at risk, with the possibility of rapid water level rises leading to inundation of low-lying zones.
Residents living in vulnerable areas, as well as drivers and passengers travelling through these regions, have been urged to exercise extreme caution to protect lives and property. Disaster Management authorities have also been requested to take all necessary measures to ensure public safety and preparedness.
The Flood Warning Message No. 05 is valid until 3.00 PM on 30 November 2025. (Newswire)
