Middle East Crisis: Enough Fuel Stocks in Sri Lanka, Don’t Panic Buy

Sri Lanka has sufficient fuel stocks to avoid any shortage despite escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), D.J. Rajakaruna, said.

Speaking on public concerns over long queues reported at some filling stations, Rajakaruna said there is no fuel crisis in the country and urged the public not to panic.

He said CPC has reviewed its current stocks and incoming shipments and confirmed that supplies are adequate for more than a month even if no additional shipments arrive.

According to the CPC Chairman, existing and scheduled stocks are sufficient for 37 days overall, with diesel stocks adequate for 35 days and aviation fuel for 47 days.

Rajakaruna noted that Sri Lanka does not primarily import refined petrol and diesel from Middle Eastern countries. Instead, recent shipments have arrived from India, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea, mainly due to lower freight costs and shorter distances.

He said any potential impact would relate only to crude oil imports, but current reserves would still be sufficient to operate for about a month.

Rajakaruna urged the public not to create unnecessary panic, warning that unwarranted rushes to filling stations could lead to avoidable disruptions. (Newswire)
