The Excise Department of Sri Lanka said it posted record revenue in the first quarter of 2026, exceeding its target for the period.
The department said the Excise revenue reached Rs. 70.4 billion by March 31st, surpassing the target of Rs. 61.95 billion and achieving 113.6% of the expected income, also representing a 114.8% increase compared to the first quarter of 2025.
Excise Commissioner General M. B. N. A. Pemarathna attributed the growth to strengthened enforcement measures, including tighter monitoring of liquor manufacturers, the introduction of security labels on bottles, increased raids on illegal alcohol production and regular inspections of licensed outlets.
The department, which ranks among the top three revenue-generating state institutions, has set a target of Rs. 245 billion for 2026, the department added. (Newswire)
