The Department of Wildlife Conservation has temporarily closed campsites at the Kumana and Gal Oya national parks due to the prevailing severe drought conditions.
At Kumana National Park, all existing bookings for the Ada Kumbuka I, Ada Kumbuka II, Gal Amuna, Heraligaskara and Moyakata campsites have been cancelled.
All campsites associated with the Hathpotha entrance of Gal Oya National Park have also been closed, with existing bookings cancelled. Further reservations for the affected campsites have been suspended until further notice.
The Department said alternative dates will be offered to tourists whose bookings have been cancelled.
Meanwhile, tourist bungalows and campsites in Zones I and II of Yala National Park will not be opened for October through the raffle draw scheduled to be held at the department’s head office on Sept. 7, 2026.
The department said the affected facilities at Yala will be reopened for new bookings once the drought conditions ease and alternative dates have been provided to tourists whose existing reservations were cancelled. (Newswire)
