An investigation has been launched into a viral social media video showing three young women travelling unsafely on a motorcycle without protective helmets.

According to the Police, the video circulated widely on social media in recent days, prompting the Sri Lanka Police to initiate investigations through the Buttala Police Station.

Investigations led to the identification of the registered owner of the motorcycle, the rider, and the two other young women who were travelling on the vehicle. They are residents of Kolombugala, Hidikivula and Unawatuna areas.

Police further revealed that the 23-year-old rider did not possess a valid driving licence.

Accordingly, the rider is scheduled to be produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (May 11) on charges of riding without a valid driving licence, carrying two passengers without protective helmets, transporting excess passengers, and reckless riding.

The registered owner of the motorcycle is also due to be produced before court for permitting an unlicensed individual to operate the vehicle.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Buttala Police Station. (NewsWire)
