Sri Lanka faces an elevated risk from the combined effects of stronger El Niño conditions, rising costs and possible heavy rainfall during the upcoming Maha cultivation season, according to a new UN report.
The Asia-Pacific assessment places Sri Lanka among countries of “elevated concern,” with above-average rainfall possible from October as the Second Inter-Monsoon begins.
The report said additional rain could help replenish reservoirs, but excessive rainfall during Maha planting may cause flooding, waterlogging and delays to agricultural activities.
It also warned that high fuel and fertilizer costs could intensify the impact on food production. Diesel and petrol prices remain about 44% and 41% above pre-Middle East crisis levels, respectively, while Sri Lanka remains exposed to imported fertilizer and international wheat prices.
