The Hydrology & Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department has issued its latest update on islandwide river water levels and rainfall conditions as at 9.30 am today (November 23), indicating alert status and minor flood conditions at several monitoring points.
According to the department, alert levels have been recorded at Magura on the Maguru Ganga, Panadugama on Nilwala Ganga, Deduru Oya at Moragaseswewa, and Attanagalu Oya at Dunamala, with water levels at some stations continuing to rise.
Minor flood conditions have been reported at:
* Kalawellawa (Millakanda) on Kuda Ganga
* Baddegama on Gin Ganga
Meanwhile, rising trends were observed at Baddegama (Gin Ganga), Deduru Oya, and Attanagalu Oya, while water levels in several other locations showed a falling pattern.
The highest rainfall during the past 24 hours was recorded at:
* Galgamuwa (Mee Oya) – 115.3 mm
* Wellawaya (Kirindi Oya) – 75.7 mm
* Moraketiya (Walawe Ganga) – 38.2 mm
Most other river stations across the country remain in normal status, however authorities warn that continued rainfall could lead to sudden rises in water levels.
The Irrigation Department has urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by local disaster management officials.
