Sri Lanka is set to host the 60th anniversary celebrations of the World Buddhist Sangha Council from November 28 to December 2, with the participation of Buddhist monks and delegates from around the world.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the conference will commence on November 28 at the Nagananda International Institute for Buddhist Studies in Kelaniya, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Several events are also scheduled to be held in Anuradhapura and Kandy as part of the celebrations.

A special discussion to review preparations for the international event was held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (26), with the participation of World Buddhist Sangha Council Organising Committee Chairman Ven. Dr. Bodagama Chandima Thera, Secretary-General Ven. Dr. Maitipe Wimalasara Maha Thera and Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

The meeting focused on arrangements for more than 600 delegates, including Buddhist monks representing countries across the world, approximately 250 Sri Lankans residing overseas and around 250 Sri Lankan Buddhist monks.

Special attention was given to ensuring security for foreign Buddhist monks and other delegates, alongside arrangements for medical services, first aid and essential infrastructure facilities.

Officials also discussed the potential economic benefits of the international gathering, noting that the arrival of a large number of foreign participants could contribute to foreign exchange earnings and promote Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

Meanwhile, the World Buddhist Sangha Council has proposed providing Rs. 500,000 each to 15 Buddhist temples damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, to support their restoration.

The initiative, along with arrangements for infrastructure development and decorations at conference venues and surrounding cities, was also discussed.

The meeting was attended by senior Buddhist clergy, government officials and representatives of security agencies, including officials from the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Department of Buddhist Affairs, Sri Lanka Police and the Sri Lanka Army. (Newswire)
