Four individuals, including a supervisory officer attached to the Kappetipola certified boys’ school, were arrested by the Welimada Police today (30) over allegations of assaulting a group of students with sticks and poles.
Those arrested also include a cook, an electrical technician and a masonry instructor who had been providing vocational guidance to the children at the institution.
The school is reportedly operated to rehabilitate children aged between 13 and 18 who have been found guilty of various offences.
However, a group of students at the facility reported that they were unable to endure the alleged abuse and assaults, and informed the National Child Protection Authority via telephone.
Following the complaint, officers from the Bandarawela Police Division Child Protection Unit, provincial child protection officers and Welimada Police carried out an inspection at the certified school.
Based on statements recorded from the students, the suspects were arrested and produced before court.
The magistrate has ordered that the suspects be remanded for 14 days. ( NewsWire)
