The Hajj festival will be celebrated in Sri Lanka on May 28 after the new moon was not sighted on Saturday, the Colombo Grand Mosque said.

In a statement, the mosque said the crescent moon was not observed on May 17, leading religious authorities to determine the date of the festival accordingly.

The announcement sets the observance of the Hajj festival in Sri Lanka for May 28, in line with the moon-sighting process used to determine dates in the Islamic calendar.

Moon sightings are traditionally used in many Muslim communities worldwide to establish the beginning and end of key religious observances and festivals. (Newswire)
