Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says around 46,000 children who have been subjected to abuse and exploitation are still awaiting justice, urging the government to expedite legal proceedings without delay.
He made these remarks during a discussion held at the Opposition Leader’s Office on issues related to child protection.
Premadasa questioned the delay in addressing complaints involving child abuse and said many victims had not received justice during their childhood, calling for urgent steps to ensure proper redress.
He also referred to the National Child Protection Policy, noting that although it was initiated in 2019 with plans for implementation by 2025, the government has now pushed implementation to 2029. He questioned how commitments made under the 2024 mandate could be deferred in this manner, calling it a serious injustice to children.
The Opposition Leader said his party would support any measures taken to strengthen child protection, including the immediate implementation of the policy this year.
He also pointed out that around 4,000 cases are currently pending in courts and stressed the need for faster hearings.
Premadasa further called for a special task force under the President to expedite investigations and ensure justice for all 46,000 complainants, adding that the issue should not be politicised.
He said both he and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya would offer unconditional support for efforts to protect children’s rights and ensure justice for victims. (Newswire)
