Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) have warned that legal action will be taken against individuals who discharge household wastewater into roadside rainwater drains, noting that the practice poses public health and environmental risks.

Authorities said rainwater drains are designed solely to carry rainwater and should not be used for disposing household wastewater.

They said filariasis mosquitoes breed in polluted drains, adding that these systems are intended only for rainwater runoff.

Authorities noted that in many urban areas, residents have connected kitchen sinks, bathrooms and even toilet outlets to rainwater drains.

They said legal action will be taken from now on against anyone discharging such wastewater into drainage systems.

Authorities stressed that only rainwater should enter roadside drainage networks, adding that no form of household wastewater should be released into them under any circumstances.

They further urged the public to act responsibly in waste management and protect public health and the environment. (Newswire)
