The Sri Lanka Netball Executive Committee has imposed a one‑year ban on a senior player accused of making a derogatory remark against officials during the Asian Netball Championship in Hong Kong, it was reported.
According to state newspaper Dinamina, the player allegedly told teammates, “the old women jump into every photo,” while the squad was preparing for a group picture after the awards ceremony.
The decision, taken by the eight‑member Executive Committee including the Association’s President and Secretary, has been referred to the Netball Disciplinary Committee comprising a panel of lawyers.
A final ruling will follow an inquiry. The Association has also notified the Army Security Services Institution, where the player is employed, though no response has yet been received.
Secretary Damayanthi Jayathilake lodged the complaint, supported by Captain Thisala Algama and Coach Somitha de Alwis, who reported the incident at the time. President Vajira Neththikumara later tabled the matter before the Executive Committee, which resolved to enforce the ban.
Sri Lanka’s campaign in Hong Kong marked a historic low, with the team finishing third, its worst performance to date, and losing hopes of qualifying for next year’s Netball World Cup in Australia.
The setback triggered a wave of recriminations, with administrators, coaches, and players trading accusations.
Sri Lanka had consistently reached the finals of the Asian Netball Championship since 2009, making this year’s absence from the title clash particularly striking.
The tournament was preceded by disputes over player selection between Coach de Alwis and the Association, prompting intervention from the Ministry of Sports over medical report issues.
Several senior players also met Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage to air grievances before departure. (Newswire)
