Container controversy: SL customs issues clarification

June 8, 2025 at 12:19 PM

Sri Lanka Customs has denied claims that 323 recently released shipping containers contained weapons, drugs, or gold, stating that the goods were limited to industrial items and raw materials, as declared by the importers.

Speaking at a special media briefing held today (June 8), Customs Media Spokesperson Seevali Arukgoda said the containers were released only after a thorough examination of all relevant import documents.

Addressing concerns over the release of the containers without physical inspection, Customs reiterated that there was no evidence to suggest any illegal items were smuggled in.

The clarification comes in response to growing speculation and allegations surrounding the nature of the goods and the process by which the containers were cleared. (NewsWire)
